Late afternoon and I was driving back from West Sussex in the torrential rain, listening to my music on shuffle. At the point where the A23 became the M23, the back of the car was suddenly lit with an intense orange glow. It was totally surreal. Obviously there was a huge black cloud above me but the horizon behind had cleared just in time for the rich colours of sunset to filter through.
At this moment my phone switched tracks and I heard the intro of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' (the lovely ukulele version I used at the end of Kara's funeral). It suddenly occurred to me that if the sun was shining while it was still raining then there should be a rainbow somewhere. And just then the motorway curved to the left and a beautifully bright rainbow appeared against the dark grey skies ahead - it was as if I was driving straight towards it. The motorway continued to bear left and a second rainbow appeared. It was so beautiful I contemplated exiting at Crawley to try to take a photo, but it seemed like a crazy idea given the awful driving conditions and the ephemeral nature of rainbows. So I carried on, heading towards the rainbows with a smile on my face, thinking of my beautiful girl. Just as the song started to fade, I reached another bend in the road and both rainbows disappeared from view.
Well, I thought, that must have been my daughter wishing me a Happy New Year
